Here’s the stats…

I believe we should pay for our films, at the cinema, on the telly and on our devices. That (outside the film industry) is not always a popular point of view. As Communications Director for the Irish Industry Trust for IP Awareness I’m very familiar with the fact that my views are disliked by many. There is a ‘Robin Hood’ myth around pirate sites, giving the people free films is seen (by some) as heroic. It’s a challenge to talk about piracy and copyright issues without sounding …preachy but if you are thinking – where’s the harm…listen up

  • 35% of consumers knowingly participated in illegal downloading of digital content
  • 1 in 3 Teens downloaded illegal content in the past 12 months
  • 1 in 4 Adults downloaded illegal content in the past 12 months
  • Films make up 70% of digital pirated materials

In April 2017 in a landmark case, the MPA (Motion Picture Association) won a legal action to block sites which provide illegal pirated content online in Ireland. It is a similar action which has taken place in a number of EU countries. In January 2018, another eight Pirate websites were shut down by an MPA legal action, representing five of the major film studios.

One of the key contributors to piracy is either misunderstanding or simple lack of knowledge on the part of the consumer. So the Irish Industry Trust for IP Awareness as the film, TV and video industry’s consumer education body is here to help you out. We are playing a crucial role in educating the consumers, not just about the damage that piracy causes to the wider economy but also offering the consumer legal options to consume content.
